Where have all the flowers gone (1961) is a folk song. The
first three verses were written by Pete Seeger in 1955, He was inspired by
Mikhail Sholokhov's novel And Quiet Flows the Don, which is about Czarist
Russia. Seeger's lyrics show how war and suffering can be cyclical in nature:
girls pick flowers, men pick girls, men go to war and fill graves with their
dead which get covered with flowers

Orphans of Ur
O my flooded,

Brickwork of
Ur!
My good house,

been piled in heaps,
As I lay
myself down with you
in a breach in
your good ravaged house,
I shall, like
a fallen ox
never be able
to rise again.

The period of high Stalinism that
followed the Writers’ Congress is a good context in which to observe the
transformations that have accompanied generic transfers between literary traditions.
Idiosyncratic and controversial as Bukharin’s address to the Congress was, it
highlights the central principle that informed the massive recirculation of
artistic modes, genres, and forms in the Soviet sphere during the early Stalin
period.1 This was the concept of ‘world literature,’ taken up by Maxim Gorky in
the revolutionary moment but articulated from a material, organizational
standpoint in the 1930s. The Soviet multinational writers’ bureaucracy on the
one hand, and a series of leftist international writers’ congresses on the
other, formalized and sometimes centralized the process of cross-cultural
literary exchange.

In the early years of World WarII, the German military, especially the SS upheld the idea of Aryan superiority
and racial purity. However, as the war
progressed Germany began to suffer profound man power shortages, forcing the
military to make compromises. Eventually
the German Wehrmacht and SS would be comprised of units from various foreign
nationalities. Among the most unique was
a Wehrmacht, later Waffen SS unit called the Indische Legion, comprised of
soldiers who hailed from the Punjab region of India

considered to be one of the first (if not the first) film to depict the life of
the Kurdish and Yazidi peoples. With this film Beknazarian cemented his place
among the leading Soviet directors of the 1920’s. He was widely hailed as a
master of his craft and an innovative filmmaker. While most films were
depicting the East as an exotic land of beautiful belly dancers and endless
caravans, Beknazarian was the first to show the oppressed and harsh existence
of Eastern peoples, thus becoming the first realist of oriental cinema
